Unlike some of our current Illinois politicians , Lincoln , at least on this occasion , refused to wheel and deal ( for votes on relocating the State Capital from Vandalia to Springfield , though he certainly did some wheeling on other occasions ) 
Lincoln was in the habit of reading on his back , lying stretched out on the parlor floor . This irritated Mrs. Lincoln who thought it undignified in a man of his prominence .
The romance of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge and her tragic early death was the subject of numerous interviews by William Herndon and was recorded by him in his early Lincoln biography . Since then , many historians have raised doubts about the authenticity of the famous story but recent authors , including the late Illinois historian John Y. Simon ( 1933-2008) have placed greater confidence in Herndon's account . It is hard to believe that new evidence for the Lincoln / Rutledge story will emerge at this late date .
